Recording Notes

The CD was recorded between October 2006 and May 2007 and used several studios. Generally the songs were rehearsed and pre-produced at AB Trail Studios, tracked at Fiction Music Studio and Shattered Wing Studios , and returned to Fiction Music Studios for mixing and mastering.

Matthew Thomas did the engineering at Shattered Wings and David Campbell engineered the Fiction sessions. The production was done by David at Fiction Music.

Generally, the band recored live in the studio with the drums being tracked in their own room, Paul's rig in an iso booth and Gary and David in the control room. Gary went direct via an Aguilar DI and David went via a Roger Linn Adrenalinn. David's parts were subsequently re-recorded at Fiction Music as were all the vocals and saxes.

Paul used a PRS through an ADA pre-amp and a THD cabinet. He used Boss effects and a Roland footpedal. We tracked him with his effects instead of trying to put them on later. His keyboard was a Roland D50.

Gary used his Yamaha bass, a DI box and a Boss chorus and a touch wah. He also used his bass pedals triggering a D-50 and Linplug's Albino.

David used his Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion through his Mesa Boogie (Maverick Dual Rectifier). He also used a Morley wah. Sometimes he used a delay (like in the solo of Tempra) otherwise it is pretty well a straight guitar sound throughout. For keyboards, David used a ton of softsynths including Linplug's Albino3, Cronox and Sophistry, Camel Audio's Cameleon, U-he's Zebra and Zebralette, Logic's electric piano and organ and various synths (especially Sculpture). We also used a ton of others (Crystal, Reaktor, Wasp etc etc.) but all of them were VIs.

Angie used an assortment of saxes. She uses a Selmer tenor, alto and soprano sax and sometimes runs them through a Digitech processor (and David used quite a few plug-ins as well)

Alain has a Maple drum kit which he plays left handed. We used a lot of different types of micing techniques from very close and dry to a huge room sound. We tried to get a different sound for each song.

We used a ton of different mics throughout. At Fiction Music, almost all the mics went through a tube-solid state switchable Millenium Media pre-amp/eq/comp, via an assortment of Neumann mics. At Shattered Wing we used Neumanns, CADs, Rodes, AKGs, Royers etc. etc. and a lot of different preamps (especially nice were the Dakings).

All the songs were either recorded directly into, or transferred into Fiction's G5 array and the mixing, production and mastering was done using Logic Pro7 and a TON of plug ins. (Sonalksis, Nomad Factory, PSP, Ozone, Waves, etc etc). Cyanide 2 was used for the vocal processing in Diagramma (the phone-like parts) using a preset called Dark Doggie.

We used some drum loops on the CD (in Diagramma and Awakened) all of which David built either in Logic or using his PC laptop running Live. We use the laptop live as a VST host as well as a way to trigger the loops and some sound-design elelments (ambiences and sfx).

The album was produced by David Campbell, and engineered by Matthew Thomas and David Campbell.

All the songs were arranged by the band. David wrote Threads, 3 Valley Gap, Diagramma, Hiding in Waiting and Tempra. Gary and Alain (and Greg Kampf and Chuck Ho) wrote Arachnophobia. Paul Joanis wrote Awakened and David wrote the words and the outro section (which features the hauntingly beautiful sax work of Angie).
